Folds and False Caves
Gallery 1: Caves
This series of paintings uses caves as metaphors for the inner spaces of the self. The title “Folds and False Caves” comes partly from Gilles Deleuze’s theory of individual identity being created by a fold in the material of existence. I paired this idea with the phrase “false caves of perception” which comes from Tibetan Buddhist philosophy.
Source imagery comes from photographs that I took, mostly in the wilderness of Alaska, both in the forest and under the glacier near the town where I grew up.
